Dear employees,

I wanted to share a really engaging way to both learn and practice real-life cybersecurity skills: playing an online game called picoCTF.

The storyline in the game may target young adults, but the challenges themselves become extremely challenging. Many companies have had their employees play picoCTF, and even many IT professionals learned something new from their experience playing.

Playing picoCTF is completely free, and it allows anyone with zero experience in programming or cybersecurity get a feel for the subject, all in the form of a game with a storyline. But the game isn’t only for beginners — the challenges start out easy and gradually build up in difficulty, eventually reaching difficulty mimicking real-life cybersecurity problems that professionals work on. Game hints help you solve the challenges when you get stuck.

There is a two week competition period for middle and high school students to win prizes — September 27 - October 11, 2019 — but anyone can still play during this period; just students will be eligible for prizes. (Encourage your kids’ school or your friends’ kids’ schools to play!) After the competition period is over, the game remains online for year-round access.

I recommend anyone of any skill level (complete beginner to advanced) to give it a try. Improving our overall cybersecurity skills is beneficial to our company as a whole.
